Shipbuilding

Shipyards face a unique set of problems when it comes to preparing shipboard labels. Labels must be produced in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Additionally, shipboard labels must survive challenging environmental and physical conditions. Throughout the vessel, labels may be exposed to abrasion, heat, fuels, cleaning agents, acids, and lubricants. On the weather deck, UV exposure and salt spray are ever-present concerns.
Since 1958, the United States Navy has specified Metalphoto® anodized aluminum for shipboard markings. Metalphoto offers shipbuilders three primary advantages over other label-making systems:
Reliability – The equipment used to process Metalphoto is user-friendly. Metalphoto processing equipment offers years of reliable service, without the need for regular calibration and field service. Once an operator is trained, the system will provide consistency and repeatable results. In contrast, laser marking systems often require factory involvement to achieve desired results.
Flexibility – Metalphoto comes in a variety of thicknesses, finishes, and colors. Thin gauges (.003” & .005”) or dead-soft material may be used when marking curved surfaces. Mid-gauges (.012”, .020”, .032”) are used for standard placards and shipboard labels. Heavy gauges (.063”, .090", .125”) can be used for panel fronts. Satin finish is standard for most shipboard applications, but matte finish is available when glare is a concern.
Economy – A complete Metalphoto processing system costs less than other systems, including equipment, supplies, and training. And Metalphoto labels last longer than competitve materials which keeps reworks to a minimum. Finally, the process is simple which allows easy training of new operators when turnover occurs.
Shipyards that have limited label requirements rely on qualified Metalphoto Converters – a network of label producers with complete processing and fabricating capabilities.
How you apply labels makes a difference. With Metalphoto, you can choose to use a variety of adhesives specifically designed for use in the marine environment. Or, you can use rivets or fasteners. Contact your Horizons representative for additional information about proper application procedures.
